Arts District Mural Supports Ukraine Cause with a Code

Corrie Mattie is known for tattoos and murals that support popular causes.

LA Loft Blog staffers are fascinated by the Arts District street art mostly in the form of large murals. We like to include them in our posts about what is happening in the community. The arts district is also known for its industrial lofts and vibrant restaurants Earlier this year local street and tattoo artist Corrie Mattie teamed up with fellow artist Juliano Trindade to create an Arts District mural in support of a Ukraine defense fund. “I was in the middle of doing a mural in Melrose. And then news broke out that Russia invaded Ukraine,” she said.

Mattie likes to say her art gives “access to activism.” A similar mural with a coded call to action celebrates the lifelong work of Betty White for animal welfare. The Be Like Betty mural, created in January, raised almost $20,000 for a local dog rescue. And this piece is no different. At the bottom of the mural, there’s a QR code. You can see a link to that mural on Melrose here. #ArtsDistrictLA #belikebetty

If you venture into the Arts District, you can even make a donation by pointing your smartphone at a new mural. Recently, Corie Mattie, otherwise known as LA Hope Dealer, has been adding QR codes to her eye-catching murals. Open the camera on your phone, focus on the code and it will direct you to a site where you can make a donation or find more information related to the issue depicted in the piece. If you do this while viewing “To Ukraine With Love,” her recent collaboration with artist Juliano Trindade, you might visit the National Bank of Ukraine website.”See the whole story and video in this link

Downtown Los Angeles: New Cycle Cafe Serves Fun For Everyone All Day Long in The Arts District

The all-day restaurant Detroit Vesey’s in the Arts District leans queer, sober, and cyclist-heavy. Still, owner Erin Detroit Vesey doesn’t want to limit anyone from having a good time inside the newly established cycle Mecca in the DTLA arts district at:

“Both [cycling and queer] cultures have specific times where you often go and do things,” says Vesey, ending cycling rides with friends and taking in evening shows. “I wanted to figure out how to make that work for an all-day, sober situation.” In November, the shop opened, offering a mostly breakfast and lunch menu filled with staple LA options like a breakfast burrito (available vegan), a burger, and a fried chicken sandwich. There are nods to Detroit as a dining town, too, like Sanders chocolate, cheese curds, and Faygo sodas. In addition, there are plans to install a new alcohol license to serve cocktails next year — alongside quality mocktails and other non-alcoholic drinks for the sober crowd and those who have a long ride home.
