California’s Mills Act

L.A. Loft Blog readers love homes with character.  #ca #millsact

To help, the great state of California has given a special gift to loft lovers and to all of those who appreciate the history and splendor of antique architecture.  Promoted by the State Parks Office of Historic Preservation, but administered by cities and counties, The Mills Act law gives monetary rewards to incentivize the restoration and preservation of qualified old buildings by property owners.  In Downtown L.A., the owners are loft condominium homeowners and their HOA homeowners associations.  |  Mills Act Sold

Since 1972, the program has successfully help to restore and maintain many, often beautifully ornate, historically significant buildings. Today, there are 47 Mills Act condominium units in Greater Los Angeles offering major savings on property taxes. Downtown L.A. has the greatest bulk of these condos. For single family home dwellers, there are currently 46 Mills Act houses to choose from.

Art Swing is one of several creative installations this week at Debs Park Audubon Center

This week, the Audubon Center at Debs Park is attracting lots of extra visitors with its art installations by unique artists such as Kate Lain.  Pass through a doorway made of a floating fabric wall. On the fabric are cyanotypes, photographic traces of local native plants, dirt, water, and sunlight. The form of the installation suggests a familiar architectural form, a threshold between outside and in; however, the walls are porous and change in response to the environment around them. Notions of interior and exterior become blurry. So, perhaps do shelter and home. Kate Lain is a Pasadena-based multidisciplinary artist. Her work asks people to reconsider how they conceive of nature. The Arroyo Arts Collective 5-installation show Shelter is made possible in part through the generous support of the Audubon Center at Debs Park, Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Check them out free behind the Audubon Center at 4700 Griffin Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90031. #highlandpark #la #audubon #debs
