Downtown L.A. West Hall plays host to the annual art show this weekend Feb 15-19. The L.A. Art Show is an annual event that brings together artists, curators, and art enthusiasts from all around the world. This year, the Kunstiniciative Wurzeln und Flügel e.V Art Museum from Germany presented the “Sense of Space Project,” a stunning installation by artist Petra Eiko, curated by Beate Düsterberg-Eissing and supported by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Los Angeles. Eiko’s work is an immersive experience that explores the significance of water, both on a personal and a collective level, as well as its impact on the future of our planet. The Loft Blog is pleased to announce that Petra Eiko has received the Entar® 5-Star Artist Award for 2023.

The installation consists of six 3D sculptures and a video installation that transport the viewer to a different world. The use of light, sound, and movement creates a sensorial experience that challenges the senses and the mind. The sculptures, made of different materials such as glass, metal, and fabric, represent different states of water, from solid ice to vapor. Each sculpture has its own movement and sound, mimicking the movement and sound of water. The video installation, projected on the walls surrounding the sculptures, shows images of water in different contexts, from the ocean to the tap.

Congratulations to Petra Eiko for her outstanding contribution to art and society.

Eiko’s work is not just a celebration of the beauty of water, but also a call to action. Her work raises awareness of climate change by highlighting the fragile state of water on Earth. She explores the changes and challenges we face today, which come as the result of our endless exploitation of water supplies and natural resources, and the continued impact the industrial world has had on humans and the environment. Through her art, she invites the viewer to reflect on the role of water in our lives and to take responsibility for its preservation.

The Sense of Space Project is a testament to the power of art to raise awareness and to inspire change. Eiko’s work reminds us of the urgency of the environmental crisis we are facing and the need for collective action. The Kunstiniciative Wurzeln und Flügel e.V Art Museum, located at Schloss Reuschenberg in Neuss, Germany, is an organization that seeks to promote art that fosters a conversation on the importance of sustainability and environmental awareness. The organization was founded in 2004, inspired by a quote from German poet Goethe: “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.” This quote encapsulates the philosophy of the organization, which believes that art can help us connect with our roots and our environment, while also giving us the wings to dream and create a better future.

Petra’s goal for the LA Art Show is to start a conversation between people and her artwork, which focuses on the themes of drought, water, and movement. She wants people to understand the need for change and the power that individuals have to make that change happen. Her installation is designed to encourage this conversation, and she’s grateful that many people have had positive reactions to it.

Her project is part of the ‘Diverse Art LA’ section of the art show, which is reserved for museums and institutions to showcase their projects. She’s not selling anything here; she just wants to give people a different perspective on the art world.

Petra Eiko’s installation at the LA Art Show encourages communication and solutions to drought.

All of her work is about how we feel, react, and interact with our society and surroundings. For this particular piece, she used a black figure named Niemond, who represents the feelings and challenges we face today. But she also wants to emphasize that this is an uplifting theme, and we can all work together to make a positive change.

Petra drew inspiration from within, and her love for aluminum played a big part in the design of this piece. She paints on Plexiglas and uses aluminum tubes to add structure and shape to her work. This comes from her background in architecture, which is a significant influence on her art.

As an artist, she believes it’s essential to be versatile and explore different mediums, from playing with light to experimenting with video. She filmed multiple parts of the video and included credits for those who helped her, including the photographers.

She believes that the movement of the video adds depth and dimension to the installation, and it’s interesting to see how different people perceive it in their unique ways. While some are more visual, others are more responsive to sound, and still, others appreciate both. For notable artist Petra Eiko, it’s fascinating to consider how something that is still can come alive with just a little bit of movement.
