No April Fools News: Tax Season Is Upon Us!
www.ReferralsHelpKids.com

TAX DAY โ€” UGH!!!

I read that we are working from January 1st through June 30th of each year to pay all of our taxes.  Before that, 100% goes to the government in some form or fashion. It pays for some kind of government worker, work program, social program, defense, project,  health care, common good. Whatever you want to call it, April 15th is TAX day, the deadline for filing your federal income taxes.

So in celebration of this particular time of year, let’s talk TAX relief. If you received last month’s letter from me, you would recall our goal of trying to raise $25,000.00 for Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, CHLA. But โ€“ we need your help, and I believe you can benefit from the TAX relief.

Just down the street from where I am typing this, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles has a whole house of kids fighting for their lives. For them and their parents’ taxes are not “top of mind,” health is. Living is. Surviving is. As you may have heard, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles is front and center in the fight against nasty diseases that destroy or cut short the lives of Children. We are thankful to have such a fantastic facility close by, doing such great work to help heal and save young people.  So even though we are trying to figure out how much we owe the taxman, many are simply hoping they can be here to actually pay taxes. So we here at Entar have resolved to do what we can to help.

Please know that my team and I are eager to help anyone you know wanting to make a move. So much so that we are willing to make an offer that your referrals will LOVE โ€“ AND โ€“ the Kids at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles will love too.

Your referrals help the kids!

They also lead the way in helping kids come back from spinal cord injuries as well as early diagnosis of autism. Last year alone, Children’s helped over 1,000,000 kids right here in Los Angeles. BUT, Children’s relies on sponsorships and donations to provide their elite level of care, and to keep families’ expenses to a minimum. So YOUR REFERRALS REALLY DO HELP THE KIDS…

Who do you know considering buying or selling a home you could refer to my real estate sales team?

Not only will they benefit from our award-winning service, but you can rest assured we are also donating to a very worthy cause.

Why I support Childrenสผs Hospital Los Angeles

I grew up right here in the Greater Los Angeles Area, born in Los Angeles County at St. Francis Hospital. I remember when I first heard about a young person close to our family suffering from a nasty disease and getting treated for that at Childrenโ€™s Hospital Los Angeles. It was then that I began to pay closer attention to the work they do at that hospital. Since then, I have learned that it is a collection of hard-working health care professionals, most making their home right here in the Los Angeles area, all coming together for a common cause. That cause is to help young people overcome unfortunate health issues that life sometimes throws our way. Being a Los Angeles Area California native, I take pride in supporting in a way that I can do the good work these people do at Childrenโ€™s. My team rallies around our annual goal of raising money and donating portions of our income to help Childrenโ€™s in their quest to heal young people when they need healing. My team and I are committed to providing outstanding results for buyers and sellers referred to us by our past clients. I have discovered that Childrenโ€™s Hospital Los Angeles shares a similar commitment to their patients. And since their services survive on sponsorships and donations, we are happy to contribute and proud to support them.

Sincerely,

Corey Chambers

Defying the Odds

She was born with Pierre Robin sequence and spent the first three months of life in the hospital. Now 8, Julie Rose stands tall and greets each day with positivity and confidence.

by Monica Rizzo | CHLA photos and patient story courtesyย Childrenโ€™s Hospital Los Angeles.

When Julie Rose comes to Childrenโ€™s Hospital Los Angeles for appointments, it often turns into a social event. The 8-year-old, a lifelong patient, is known to many hospital team members and loves catching up with people she considers to be old friends. And the feeling is mutual.

โ€œWhen people see her in the hallways, they will stop and chat. I have wondered what makes her so memorable,โ€ Julie Roseโ€™s mom, Christina, muses. โ€œItโ€™s just who she isโ€”talkative, approachable, friendly.โ€

Julie Rose is also a huge fan of the hospital that has cared for her since she was a baby. Born prematurely and diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence, a rare condition that affects the head and face, Julie Rose had cleft lip and palate, and micrognathia (an undersized jaw). For the first three months of her life, Julie Rose was a patient in CHLAโ€™s Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU).

โ€œWhen we were in the NICCU they told us she might not crawl, she might not walk,โ€ Christina says. โ€œAs sheโ€™s gotten older, she does have some physical limitations, but she does everything in her own time and her own way to make it work.โ€

Now in second grade, Julie Rose is a Girl Scout and enjoys being outdoors, doing art, and playing with her extensive doll collection. Stemming from her own experience at CHLA, she often role plays with her dolls, performing procedures on them and providing the right treatments to heal them.

โ€œShe knows quite a bit about her experience and asks about what happened to her,โ€ Christina says, noting that Julie Rose has undergone 16 surgeries and continues to see CHLA specialists in Dentistry and Orthodontics, and in the Jackie and Gene Autry Orthopedic Center for scoliosis and hip dysplasia. โ€œI kept an online photo album for her, and sheโ€™ll say โ€œWow, I went through all of that?โ€

โ€œShe loves, loves, loves CHLA and she has been a Junior Ambassador since she was 2,โ€ Christina says, referring to the program for kids and teenagers who support the hospitalโ€™s mission by fundraising and participating in a variety of volunteer and leadership opportunities. โ€œShe likes meeting the other kids and hearing about the things they do to help raise awareness and fundraise.โ€

In June, Julie Rose will join thousands of hospital supporters at CHLAโ€™s annual Walk & Play L.A. – Opens in a new window event, where she will serve as one of three patient โ€œChampions.โ€ The role is perfect for Julie Rose, who has overcome incredible odds.

Accepting of others and exuding empathy, โ€œTeachers, nurses, staff at the hospitalโ€”anywhere we go, theyโ€™re like, โ€œJulie Rose is such a joy!โ€ Christina says. โ€œWhen I think of all the things sheโ€™s gone through, youโ€™d never guess in a million years if you just met her. Sheโ€™s awesome and happy.โ€

The Giving Back and Paying It Forward Newsletter โ€” Benefiting Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles

The month of October can be a spooky month, maybe even a scary month with monstrous problems. Yikes!! Well maybe not, but words like that seem to be popping up everywhere as kids and adults alike look forward to Halloween.

In fact, according to USA Today, adults spend more on themselves to celebrate Halloween than any other day during the year. I get that. Especially if they want to hang out with the kids to go trick or treating, or to a Halloween party of some kind.

Many homeowners and homebuyers though are truly scared. Scared to death of how in the world they are going to get out of their house and into their next one (the trick).

My Treat: As a result of working with hundreds of families over the years, we have developed a special program to help home sellers and homebuyers. We will guarantee the sale of their present home at a price agreeable to them, and in the unlikely event their home does not sell, weโ€™ll buy it. Now that is how you turn a trick into a real treat.

AND rememberโ€ฆ YOUR referrals help the kids.

My heart breaks for many young people and families who will not be able to enjoy this fun time of the year out trick or treating or going to Halloween parties.

As you know, tragedy falls on many in this life. Tragedies like sickness, cancers and other nasty diseases. We aim to do what we can to help kids who are unable to get out and have fun right now, Due to these evil health problems.

My team and I are addicted to helping you and those you know buy or sell the place they call home. In fact, it is a race to help as many as possible so we can GIVE more away.

A CORE philosophy at our company is โ€˜the size of the hole you give thru is directly proportionate to the size of the hole you receive thru.

Therefore, our Mission is to Go Serve Big!!! Serve you, serve those you refer to us and of course, serve a great cause.

Zanadi and family | Story and photos courtesy CHLA

Program for Teen Parents Helps Zanadi Go for Her Goals โ€” by Katie Sweeney

It seemed like nearly everyone in Zanadiโ€™s life was telling her the same thing.

Take a break from college. Take a โ€œgap year.โ€ It will be too hard to keep your studies going; you can finish your degree later.

It was well-meaning advice. After all, Zanadi, then 19 and a sophomore at Mount St. Maryโ€™s University in Los Angeles, had just learned she was pregnantโ€”with twins. She was struggling financially, and though her boyfriend, Demonte, was by her side, she had little family support to rely on.

But while taking a year off college sounded like a good idea to other peopleโ€”her therapist, administrators at her school, her grandmotherโ€”it didnโ€™t sound good to Zanadi. In fact, it sounded terrible.

โ€œHonestly, I got really stressed out,โ€ she says. โ€œI was already halfway through school; I wanted to finish. I knew that if I took a gap year, I would probably never go back.โ€

A supportive space

Fortunately, there was one person who did not tell Zanadi to stop school: Soledad Quintanilla-Henriquez, her case manager at the NATEEN Teen Parent Support Program in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Childrenโ€™s Hospital Los Angeles.

Founded in 1985, the NATEEN Program helps expectant and parenting teens and young adults up to age 21 reach their goals and thrive through their journey. The team of social workers work with young people to identify their needs and connect them with resources for themselves and their babiesโ€”all in an affirming, welcoming and nonjudgmental space.

Zanadi was referred to NATEEN by a social worker in her OB-GYNโ€™s office. When she met Quintanilla-Henriquez, she told her about the pressure she felt to take a break from school.

To her surprise, Quintanilla-Henriquez did not echo othersโ€™ advice.

โ€œShe was basically like, I didnโ€™t have to do that if I didnโ€™t want to,โ€ Zanadi says. โ€œShe said that might be a good choice for some people, but not all people.โ€

In other words, it was up to her to decide. Zanadi felt her anxiety ease. And while she initially left her options open, as the birth of her babies neared in the summer of 2021, she was sure of her decision.

She enrolled for the fall semester. Somehow, some way, she would make it work.

Empowering teen parents

Quintanilla-Henriquez has been a case manager with NATEEN for eight years. During that time, sheโ€™s guided youth as young as 12 through their pregnancies and parenthood.

โ€œIโ€™m so passionate about this program,โ€ she says. โ€œMany times, if not all the time, NATEEN is the only resource these young people have available to help them.โ€

That support includes case management and counseling; free supplies like diapers, baby wipes, strollers and car seats; health education, including birth control; life skills education, including positive parenting skills; job training; child care referrals and more.

The team also helps young participants stay in school. Although traditional high schools often discourage pregnant teens from continuing to attend, NATEEN case managers step in to inform students of their rights and options.

โ€œWe let them know that their school does not have the right to kick them out because of their pregnancy,โ€ Quintanilla-Henriquez says.

In addition, case managers educate their clients about nontraditional high schools that support pregnant teens and teen parents. These schools often offer flexible schedules, free child care, independent study and half-day options.

Another big focus for NATEEN: teaching self-care. โ€œThese young people often get overwhelmed by their new role as a parent,โ€ she says. โ€œWe have a curriculum that teaches them mindfulness and how to step away from certain situations or de-escalate conflicts with a partner.โ€

The NATEEN Teen Parent Support Program, which is free and confidential, provides services for 60 to 100 youth per year. For Quintanilla-Henriquez, the best part is seeing these teens mature into young adultsโ€”and good parents.

โ€œThey come in saying, โ€˜My life is over,โ€™ and by the time they leave the program they say, โ€˜I feel invincible. I graduated high school, I feel like I can do anything,โ€™โ€ she says. โ€œItโ€™s really rewarding to see that growthโ€”to see them realize just how much theyโ€™re capable of.โ€

Demonte and Zanadi

Life with twins

A baby is crying in the background, and Zanadi is shuffling around her apartment while on a Zoom call, gently shooing the dog from one of the girlsโ€™ beds.

Nothing about her journey has been easy. Even her pregnancy was roughโ€”she had to go to the hospital on a couple of occasions for a threatened miscarriage. But she made it through, and her twinsโ€”Zaida and Zarayaโ€”are healthy and nearing their first birthday.

NATEEN has been her main support systemโ€”providing her with car seats, baby carriers, diapers and other essential items. One time, she and Demonte were literally on their last diaper, with no money for more. Zanadi called Quintanilla-Henriquez, who promptly brought over two packs of diapers.

โ€œI definitely appreciate all that NATEEN has done for me,โ€ says Zanadi, now 21. โ€œItโ€™s helped a lot. Itโ€™s kind of lifted some of the weight off of us since we have two, and they need twice more of everything.โ€

She and Demonte have settled into a routine, with Demonte watching the girls in the morning before work to allow Zanadi a little extra sleep. She takes her classes online, fitting in her homework when the girls are napping and after she gets them to bed at night.

โ€œI tried to [study] when they were awake, but they never let me!โ€ Zanadi says, breaking into a big smile.

She lights up when talking about her girls. โ€œThey have completely different personalities,โ€ she says. โ€œZarayaโ€™s wild and all over the place, and sheโ€™s really silly so she likes to play. Zaida likes to play, too, but sheโ€™s a lot more laid back. Itโ€™s really fun learning what they like and what they donโ€™t like.โ€

Still, itโ€™s not easy to juggle motherhood, college and two part-time jobsโ€”all while struggling financially. โ€œI feel like I never make enough money because everything costs so much,โ€ Zanadi says. โ€œWeโ€™re basically, like, barely making it. But weโ€™re making it.โ€

Pursuing her dreams

In May 2023, Zanadi will graduate from Mount St. Maryโ€™s University with a bachelorโ€™s degree in psychology. She is currently deciding whether to then pursue a masterโ€™s degree in social work or human resources.

โ€œShe is very determined and motivated,โ€ says Quintanilla-Henriquez. โ€œShe is a go-getter, she doesnโ€™t give up, sheโ€™s so resilient. Sheโ€™s racing for that finish line. Itโ€™s impressive.โ€

A college degree is just one of Zanadiโ€™s dreams. She has other goals for her future, too. NATEEN has helped her set those goalsโ€”and most importantly, map out the steps she needs to take to achieve them.

โ€œI want to buy a house and have a job making $60,000 or more by the time Iโ€™m 30,โ€ she shares. โ€œI have goals like that. I want to start saving money for the girls.โ€

Her biggest goal, though, is to give her twins a better life than what sheโ€™s known so far.

Zanadi grew up in North Carolina and came to Los Angeles with her mom while in high school. Sheโ€™s spent time in the foster care system, and now, her only birth family contact is with her dad and grandmother.

โ€œI want their childhood to be a lot happier than mine was,โ€ she explains. โ€œI want them to know that theyโ€™re loved. I donโ€™t want them to want for anything. I want to be able to give them what I didnโ€™t have.โ€

The crying in the background has stopped. Zanadi reports that Zaraya is happily crawling on the floor, while Zaida has drifted off to sleep. Peace, for the moment, has prevailed.

โ€œI always wanted to be a mom,โ€ she says. โ€œIโ€™ve definitely been through a lot, but Iโ€™ve also learned new things and new ways of coping and planning. It has been stressful, but it has been really rewarding, too.โ€ โ€” Story and photos courtesy Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
